Underground Standard Roars to Life with Debut Single “Animals”

Houston’s music scene has long thrived on genre-bending creativity, and a new force is emerging from its underground roots. Meet Underground Standard, a five-piece born from the creative hub of Faded Decade, and their powerful debut single, “Animals.”

Formed in April 2024, Underground Standard came together in a way that feels almost destined. Bassist Rome and vocalist Dedd (a.k.a. Always November), both from Faded Decade, pulled in drummer Baki and guitarist Nimrod for an impromptu jam session. With borrowed gear and raw urgency, the foundation of Animals was written that very first day — Nimrod crafting the initial chords while Dedd poured out the first lines of lyrics. Just weeks later, guitarist Cole joined, bringing lead lines that sharpened the track into its final form.

The result is “Animals,” a gritty anthem built on heavy grooves, snarling guitars, and an unfiltered vocal delivery that refuses to hold back. Clocking in at just under four minutes, the track balances infectious rhythm with a primal chorus designed for live stages: “Cause you’re an animal, just like me.”

Lyrically, the song is both defiant and unifying. Dedd spits lines about struggle, self-determination, and identity — equal parts confessional and confrontational. The chant-driven hook turns that raw emotion into a rallying cry, reminding listeners that beneath it all, we’re all animals fighting our way through the chaos.

Musically, Underground Standard draw from a wide palette — the sharp edge of Cage the Elephant, the grit of Basement and Superheaven, the groove of 311, and even traces of hip-hop, R&B, and funk from the members’ diverse backgrounds. It’s a sound that’s heavy yet melodic, modern yet rooted in classic rock rebellion.

Just six months into their journey, the band has already made waves: supporting OMENXIII’s Texas “Flowers Tour” and sharing spontaneous jam sessions with artists like That Mexican OT and Denzel Curry at Faded Decade. For a group this new, their trajectory is undeniable.

With “Animals” marking their debut, Underground Standard are not just another local band — they’re a movement in the making, clawing their way to the front of Houston’s music scene and beyond.
