On January 23rd, The Underground Standard delivered their longest set to date at The Neon Possum in Humble, Texas.
The night kicked off at 9:30pm with an opening set rooted in freeform jazz and blues. Cole Williford led the way on guitar, with Baki and Rome locking in the rhythm section. The set closed with an instrumental cover of Childish Gambino’s Redbone, followed by an untitled original jam currently known as “RNB” featuring Sony on lead vocals, before easing into an instrumental rendition of Lil Peep’s Star Shopping.
After a brief break, UGS returned to the stage with Always November on lead vocals for a run of original tracks including Animals, U Need Me, Enemies, Palace, and Mistakes (Cole’s Interlude). The energy shifted as Cole stepped into lead vocals for Take What You Wanted and Why’d You Go. The set closed with Always November making another appearance on the anxiety-inducing New Authority.
Following one final break, the band came back with a mixed bag of originals and covers. Cole led performances of Cyclone and Need 2, while Always November returned for Prototype, followed seamlessly by his original track Solar Sister. The night wrapped with a run of Zombies, Say It Ain’t So, and Back 2 Strangers, performed vocally by Cole and Sony.
